How to Talk About Your Clinical Experience Outside Clinical Roles

A simple way to translate nursing and healthcare experience into language that hiring managers in digital health can understand.

One of the most common challenges I hear from nurses and healthcare professionals is this:

“I know my experience is valuable. I just don’t know how to explain it.”

That is normal. Clinical environments have their own language. Digital health and health tech roles often use a different one.

Shift from tasks to outcomes

Instead of listing only what you did, describe the outcome you helped create.

For example:

  • “Supported patients through complex treatment pathways” becomes “helped people navigate complex systems under pressure”
  • “Used electronic records daily” becomes “worked confidently with clinical systems and data-driven workflows”
  • “Coordinated multidisciplinary care” becomes “aligned different stakeholders around shared patient goals”

The experience is the same. The framing changes.

Make it specific

Hiring managers respond well to concrete detail:

  • Who you worked with
  • What problem you were solving
  • What improved as a result

You do not need to oversell. Clear, honest examples are usually more persuasive than broad claims.

Keep the story consistent

Your CV, LinkedIn profile and interview answers should tell the same story: you are a healthcare professional who understands care delivery and wants to apply that experience in a different setting.

If you are unsure how to position your experience for a specific role, a focused mentoring conversation can help you practise that story with clarity and confidence.
